Kenya banned the adoption of children by foreign nationals on Thursday in a special cabinet in Nairobi meeting chaired by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The government says the ban will be in place until the country’s labor ministry formulates a new policy to regulate adoption of children by foreigners.
At the meeting, the ministry was also directed to “streamline the operations of the Child Welfare Society of Kenya”, the presidency said in a statement.
The order comes amid a controversial case involving a Kenyan child, Baby Kiano who had been adopted by foreign nationals.
On Wednesday, Baby Kiano was reunited with American couple Matt and Daisy Mazzoncini.
The story of Baby Kiano captured the country’s imagination after the The Star newspaper reported his violent confiscation from his parent’s Wetlands apartments in Nairobi by Directorate of Criminal investigation and Child Welfare Society of Kenya agents in April.
